Anambra Government Challenges Peter Obi to Apologize Over Alleged Debts Left Behind

The Anambra State Government has formally challenged former Governor Peter Obi to issue an unreserved apology to the people of the state, following claims that his administration left behind significant debts. This assertion was made by Dr. Law Mefor, the state's Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, after the current government purportedly compiled evidence of outstanding loans and other financial obligations incurred during Obi's eight years in office.

According to Mefor, the government has identified eight loans from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, totaling over $123 million, which were contracted during Obi's administration. He stated that while some of these funds had been disbursed before Obi vacated his office, they were not accurately reflected in his handover notes, leading to the ongoing controversy over the financial legacy of his governance.

“After we provided unassailable evidence in response to his challenge,” Mefor remarked, “he and his supporters have engaged in hair-splitting arguments, attempting to blame us for exposing the reality of the financial situation.” He emphasized that the records of these loans, including specific dates and amounts, can be verified through the Debt Management Office (DMO) in Abuja, reinforcing the government's position.

“It is imperative for Obi to acknowledge the financial realities and the impact of his administration’s decisions on the state’s current fiscal health,” Mefor added, calling for transparency and accountability in governance.

The exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions in Anambra State, particularly as Obi, who is a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, continues to be scrutinized for his past governance. The current administration is using this challenge as an opportunity to assert its position and clarify the financial landscape it inherited.
