Tragic Loss: OAU Final Year Student Takes Own Life Amidst Growing Concerns

A tragic incident has unfolded at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as Oluwole Oluwasegun, a final year student in the Department of Material Science and Engineering, reportedly took his own life at his off-campus residence. This heartbreaking event occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Damico area of Ooni Layout in Ile-Ife, and has sparked significant concern among peers, faculty, and local authorities.

In a statement released by the university's Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun, it was revealed that the institution's Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was promptly dispatched to the scene upon receiving notification of the incident. The police from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, were also engaged to assist in the investigation, highlighting the serious nature of the circumstances surrounding Oluwasegun's death.

“The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor,” Abiodun stated.

Abiodun expressed the university’s deep concern regarding the tragic event, noting that relevant information and items retrieved from the scene have been handed over to the police for a thorough investigation. Furthermore, the university has reached out to the appropriate student affairs authorities to ensure that the welfare and emotional support of fellow students are adequately addressed during this distressing time.
