Tragedy in Ondo: Survivor Vows to Abstain from Alcohol After Herbal Drink Crisis Claims Lives

A recent incident in Ondo State has left communities in mourning as the death toll continues to rise from the consumption of suspected adulterated herbal drinks. Reports indicate that over 30 individuals have died, while more than 50 others remain hospitalized after consuming the toxic substance. A survivor of this tragedy has stated, "If God saves me, I'll never drink again," reflecting the harrowing impact of this crisis.

The affected areas, including Odigbo town, Newtown, Orita, and Araromi-Obu, have been engulfed in grief as families mourn their loved ones. The Chairman of Odigbo Local Government, Adegoroye Taiwo, confirmed that a male seller of the toxic drink has been apprehended and handed over to the police in Akure. He emphasized that investigations are underway to determine the source of the adulterated herbal drink.

Medical experts and toxicologists have preliminarily linked the fatalities to the consumption of locally made alcoholic beverages. In response to this alarming situation, the Ondo State Government has deployed a medical team, including officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to assist in managing the crisis. Adegoroye noted, "Those people that died consumed toxic alcohol. People call it Jeji, Ere, giving it various local names, but the repercussions are devastating."

In an effort to prevent further tragedies, the local council has enacted a ban on the sale and consumption of locally made alcohol and has directed security agencies to enforce this ban strictly, arresting and prosecuting any violators. As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful for answers and justice, while grappling with the loss of life and the devastating effects of this incident.
