Rising School Fees Challenge Nigerian Parents as Academic Year Kicks Off

As the new academic session commences in Nigeria, parents and guardians are facing a daunting financial challenge as private schools have raised tuition fees by an alarming 30 to 40 percent. Reports indicate that schools in urban areas, such as Lagos, are particularly affected, with one institution increasing its fees from N86,000 to N124,000 per term, and another from N250,000 to N320,000.

This surge in fees comes at a time when many families are already struggling with the economic impact of rising fuel prices, which have prompted some school owners to reconsider their transportation services. The recent hike in petrol prices has forced schools to potentially issue revised bills to parents, reflecting the increased costs associated with running school buses. In addition to tuition hikes, parents with children in public schools are now required to pay a new levy of N20,100, a steep increase from the previous N10,100. This change disproportionately affects families that are not formally employed and struggle to provide tax clearance certificates needed for certain exemptions. The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged parents to remain resilient and not be discouraged by these financial burdens, emphasizing the importance of education amidst growing economic challenges.
