In a proactive move to strengthen food security in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has launched a support package designed to assist 10,000 farmers across the region. This initiative is particularly focused on rice and cassava cultivation, which are essential staples in the Nigerian diet and economy.
Under the terms of this initiative, 2,000 rice farmers will each receive two bags of fertilizer and one bag of urea, crucial inputs that will enhance their crop yields. Additionally, the program extends its benefits to 8,000 cassava farmers, who will receive the same amount of fertilizer and urea, alongside the distribution of 1,200 Android phones. This technological inclusion aims to improve access to agricultural information and market opportunities.
Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of supporting local farmers, stating,
“Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, and it is essential that we provide them with the tools they need to succeed.”By investing in their productivity, the government hopes to not only address food security challenges but also stimulate economic growth within the agricultural sector.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Ogun State government to enhance agricultural development and ensure that farmers can thrive amidst the challenges posed by climate change and market fluctuations. With the provision of these essential resources, the state aims to foster a resilient agricultural community that can significantly contribute to Nigeria's food security.
