The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) has raised alarms regarding the dire state of financial management among Nigerian businesses, attributing their struggles to poor financial records and inadequate cash flow management. During the 2026 Accounting for Non-Accountants Workshop held at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Annex in Lagos, SWAN identified these issues as key barriers preventing many promising enterprises from realizing their full potential.
Mrs. Ruth Jawo, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, underscored that many business owners are not failing due to a lack of market opportunities but rather due to insufficient financial knowledge. She stated, “Financial literacy has become essential for entrepreneurs, traders, professionals, employees, and business managers, particularly amid the country’s challenging economic conditions.” The workshop aimed to equip participants with practical financial skills necessary for sound decision-making and sustainable growth.
The theme of the workshop, “Business Made Easy: Practical Financial Skills,” reflects SWAN's commitment to demystifying complex financial concepts and promoting financial literacy. Jawo noted that understanding financial principles is crucial for avoiding penalties and effectively managing resources, which are vital for survival in the current economic climate.
“Financial knowledge empowers business owners to make informed decisions and achieve sustainable growth,” Jawo emphasized.
SWAN’s initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance financial competence within the Nigerian business community, which has been facing significant challenges due to economic instability. By fostering greater financial literacy, SWAN hopes to enable business owners to navigate the complexities of their financial environments and ultimately thrive.
