The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has taken a significant step in addressing the stigma surrounding HIV by urging food sector employers and workers to foster an inclusive environment. During a sensitization meeting held at the STO Resource Centre Hall in Ikeja, the agency emphasized that HIV cannot be transmitted through food handling, preparation, or service, aiming to dispel widespread misconceptions that contribute to discrimination against individuals living with the virus.
Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, represented by Director of Projects, Mr. Michael Essien, highlighted that there is no scientific basis for excluding people living with HIV from food-related employment. She stated, “A person’s HIV status does not make them a food-safety risk,” reinforcing the importance of making employment decisions grounded in scientific evidence rather than fear and misinformation.
The meeting served as a platform to educate food handlers and representatives from various food-sector associations on HIV-related workplace practices and the applicable legal provisions. Animashaun urged stakeholders to protect the confidentiality of individuals' health status while also promoting safe, inclusive, and non-discriminatory practices within the food industry.
She cautioned against the misuse of legitimate food safety and medical fitness requirements to justify discriminatory HIV screening or exclusion from employment opportunities. By advocating for an evidence-based approach, LSACA aims to not only protect the rights of individuals living with HIV but also enhance the overall safety and inclusivity of the food sector.
