The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has publicly criticized former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo over his recent comments regarding Nigeria's economic challenges and the state of democracy. Speaking from his office in Abuja, Jibrin contended that Osinbajo misrepresented the current situation, asserting that President Bola Tinubu's administration is actively working to rectify longstanding issues facing the nation.
Osinbajo, who served as Vice-President under Muhammadu Buhari, expressed concerns about the deterioration of democratic governance in Nigeria and across Africa during a recent lecture. He referenced findings from Afrobarometer surveys, which highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with democratic institutions and economic hardships experienced by citizens. According to Osinbajo, these challenges have led to a decline in public confidence in government and reduced youth engagement in electoral processes.
In response, Jibrin acknowledged the validity of some of Osinbajo's concerns but emphasized the need for the government to enhance its communication strategies. He stated, "While acknowledging the challenges highlighted by Osinbajo, it is crucial for us to communicate effectively what measures are being undertaken to tackle these issues. The administration is committed to addressing the economic and democratic concerns raised by citizens."
Jibrin's remarks come at a time when the Nigerian economy is facing significant pressure, and public sentiment towards governance is increasingly critical. He urged stakeholders to focus on collaborative solutions rather than exacerbating the narrative of despair that Osinbajo's comments may perpetuate. The Deputy Senate President's defense of the Tinubu administration aims to reassure the public that efforts are underway to foster a more robust democratic framework and economic stability.
