In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, labour leaders and pro-democracy activists have called on Nigerians to unite against the relentless increase in fuel prices and the resulting economic hardship. This appeal, made during a memorial event for late activist Abiodun Aremu in Lagos, underscores the dire financial strain that many citizens are experiencing as the government’s policies appear to favor the wealthy while neglecting the working class.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), represented by Acting General Secretary Benson Upah, expressed deep concern over the removal of fuel subsidies, stating that it has inflicted severe consequences on the livelihoods of millions. "The current economic situation is a crisis of survival for our people. The rising petrol prices have eroded the purchasing power of workers and intensified poverty across the nation," Upah stated, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention.
Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the minimum wage of N70,000 has become a cruel joke in the face of escalating living costs. He criticized the federal government for its failure to address the plight of ordinary Nigerians, suggesting that the economic policies are designed to enrich a privileged few while the majority struggle to meet basic needs.
Participants at the event, including members of the Joint Action Front (JAF), warned that the continued rise in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is pushing millions into a daily fight for survival. They urged citizens to join forces and demand accountability and relief from the government, stressing that collective action is essential to challenge the current economic injustices.
The rallying cry from these activists serves as a reminder of the pressing need for a united front against policies that threaten the welfare of the populace. As Nigeria grapples with these economic challenges, the call for action resonates louder than ever, urging citizens to stand together in the face of adversity.
