President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to General Abdourahamane Tiani, the leader of Niger's military junta, over the passing of Tiani's father. This message of sympathy arrives at a time when diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Niger are strained, particularly after the July 2023 coup that overthrew Niger's civilian government.

The recent political upheaval in Niger has led to significant shifts in regional alliances, including the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as of January 2025. These developments have raised concerns over regional stability and economic cooperation.

In a statement released by the presidency, Tinubu described the loss as a profound one and extended his sympathies to Tiani and his family, highlighting the importance of maintaining communication even amidst political discord. “In times of sorrow, we are reminded of our shared humanity,” the statement read.

“This loss is not only personal but also a reminder of the challenges we face in building a peaceful and cooperative West Africa,” Tinubu added.

The condolence message may be seen as an attempt to maintain diplomatic channels open despite the ongoing tensions, as both nations navigate the complexities of military governance and regional security issues.
