The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially charged the Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE) with the pivotal role of transforming the country's educational landscape through digital literacy and leadership development. This initiative aims to align the education sector with the demands of emerging technologies and prepare future generations for a competitive workforce in a globalized economy.
During the opening of the NAE 2026 Annual Congress in Abuja, the Academy's President, Emeritus Professor Olugbemiro Jegede, highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the National Policy on Education. He called for substantial reforms in teacher education, professional development, and classroom practices to effectively integrate digital skills into the curriculum.
“We must go beyond piecemeal reforms and address the structural weaknesses in our education system to truly achieve the objectives of this digital skills revolution,” said Jegede.
The congress, which saw the participation of key stakeholders including the Minister of Education and members of the National and State Assemblies, underscored the collaborative effort necessary to implement these changes. The NAE is expected to develop a national digital skills framework and lead the intellectual discourse surrounding policies that will equip students for a technology-oriented future.
Furthermore, the Academy will promote the integration of artificial intelligence and innovative teaching methodologies, ensuring that educators are equipped to deliver quality education that meets global standards. This initiative marks a significant step toward ensuring that Nigeria’s educational framework is not only relevant but also forward-looking in its approach to learning and skill acquisition.
