The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced a significant partnership with Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) aimed at addressing the pervasive misinformation and negative narratives surrounding migration in Nigeria. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), seeks to elevate the standards of journalism and media education concerning migration topics.
With the increasing concerns over the portrayal of migration in public discourse—often framed around crises and irregular movements—the partnership emphasizes the need to recognize the human, economic, and social dimensions of migration. By equipping journalists, students, and communication professionals with the necessary skills, the initiative aims to foster a more informed and responsible media landscape.
Under this agreement, both institutions are set to develop tailored academic content and organize training programs focused on ethical reporting. Additionally, the partnership will conduct joint research and create practical learning opportunities designed to enhance the journalistic approach to migration issues.
“In a world where migration narratives are frequently skewed, it is imperative that we provide journalists with the tools they need to report accurately and ethically,” said Sharon Dimanche, IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, during the signing ceremony.
Moreover, the collaboration will delve into innovative areas such as digital storytelling, fact-checking, and multimedia journalism, alongside public awareness campaigns aimed at countering misinformation. The goal is to promote balanced discussions around migration and ensure that the diverse experiences of migrants are adequately represented in the media.
