Emergency Landing in Bulgaria Following Bomb Threat on Austrian Airlines Flight — The Abuja Times Newsroom

An Austrian Airlines flight operating between Tel Aviv and Vienna was diverted to Sofia, Bulgaria, on Sunday due to a bomb threat that emerged as the aircraft approached Romanian airspace. According to Bulgarian authorities and the airline's statement, the flight crew made the decision to land in Sofia to ensure the safety of the 51 passengers and six crew members on board.

The transport ministry of Bulgaria confirmed that a MiG-29 fighter jet was scrambled to escort the Airbus A320 during its emergency landing. Upon safely reaching Sofia approximately half an hour after the threat was reported, the passengers were promptly evacuated from the aircraft as part of standard safety protocols.

Following the landing, a comprehensive security search was initiated to assess the aircraft's safety. Austrian Airlines reassured the public that all necessary measures were being taken, stating, "Once the search of the aircraft is complete, the passengers will be rebooked onto alternative flights as quickly as possible." This incident has raised concerns over air travel security, highlighting the importance of swift responses to potential threats.

Flight tracking data indicated that the aircraft, registered as OE-LZE, entered Romanian airspace around 9:10 PM before the crew decided to head back to Bulgaria. As the situation unfolded, the aircraft was also transmitting a general emergency squawk code, signaling the seriousness of the threat. In response, Bulgarian authorities have established a crisis response team and launched an investigation to determine the origin of the bomb threat.
