Editors Urge Protection of Press Freedom Amid Rising Harassment of Journalists

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has issued a strong statement expressing deep concern regarding the increasing harassment, intimidation, and prosecution of journalists by security agencies. In a communiqué released after their Standing Committee meeting in Kano, the NGE underscored that such actions not only endanger press freedom but also undermine the very essence of legitimate journalistic practice in Nigeria.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the Guild called on the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create an equitable environment for all political parties and candidates leading up to the 2027 general elections. The editors emphasized that a free press is essential for democracy and good governance, and any infringement on its independence could have far-reaching implications for the nation's political landscape.

Particularly troubling to the Guild is the misuse of cybercrime legislation and other laws that could restrict legitimate journalism. They urged all levels of government and the public to respect press freedom and to engage with the media constructively, rather than resorting to threats, intimidation, or violence. The Guild advocates for a system where grievances against the press can be addressed through established channels, such as the Media Ombudsman created collaboratively by various media organizations.

“Governments at all levels and members of the public should uphold and respect freedom of the press as a fundamental pillar of democracy,” stated Eze Anaba, the Guild's President.

As Nigeria approaches a pivotal election cycle, the call from the NGE serves as a critical reminder of the need to protect journalistic integrity and freedom, which are vital for a thriving democracy.
