Anambra Seeks Greater Benefits from Oil and Gas Sector Integration — The Abuja Times Newsroom

Anambra State has raised significant concerns regarding its integration into Nigeria's oil and gas sector, with officials highlighting the need for more equitable benefits from the industry. Law Mefor, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, expressed disappointment at the current situation, where Anambra, despite being an oil-producing state, has not been fully incorporated into the national oil and gas master plan.

During a recent press briefing, Mefor emphasized that the state has immense potential in natural resources that should translate into substantial benefits for its citizens. He lamented that the lack of integration has resulted in missed opportunities for economic growth and development, which are crucial for the welfare of the people of Anambra.

“It is unfortunate that we are yet to fully leverage our oil resources for the benefit of our state,” Mefor stated. He called on the federal government and relevant agencies to ensure that Anambra receives its rightful share of benefits, which would enable the state to invest in critical infrastructure and social services.

The Anambra government is now pushing for a comprehensive review of the oil and gas policies to include provisions that would ensure the state is adequately compensated for its contributions to the national economy. This call for action reflects a growing sentiment among many oil-producing states in Nigeria, advocating for a more equitable distribution of resources that align with their contributions to the sector.
