Zamfara Livestock Agency Calls for Collective Action Against Rabies

The Zamfara Livestock Development Agency has issued a rallying cry for stakeholders to unite in the fight against rabies, a disease that poses significant health risks to both animals and humans. Executive Director Dr. Ismaila Gusau made this appeal during a recent sensitisation exercise held in Gusau, which marked the celebration of World Rabies Day. This event not only included educational activities but also featured a carnival procession and the launch of a free anti-rabies vaccination campaign at the Emir’s palace.

Organised by the Zamfara Chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), the event attracted veterinarians, government officials, and various stakeholders, all committed to enhancing public awareness and fostering coordinated efforts to tackle rabies. Dr. Gusau emphasized the crucial role that traditional institutions play in this regard, calling for their engagement in promoting regular vaccination of dogs and other pets to mitigate the risks associated with the disease.

Highlighting the necessity of community involvement, Dr. Gusau urged dog owners to ensure their pets receive annual vaccinations. He noted that the collaboration of traditional rulers is vital in spreading awareness about rabies and encouraging preventive measures. In response, the Emir of Gusau, Dr. Abdulkadir Bello, pledged his council’s support in educating the populace about the dangers of rabies and encouraged traditional leaders to work closely with health authorities to eliminate the disease.

Moreover, the Emir advised the community to be cautious regarding the sources of their meat, urging them to avoid purchasing beef from unapproved vendors to safeguard against unhealthy livestock products. This initiative underscores a collective responsibility towards public health and the importance of proactive measures in disease prevention.
