The World Bank has issued a stark warning regarding the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to both alleviate and exacerbate poverty in Africa. While the financial institution acknowledges the remarkable growth of Nigeria’s developer community, which has seen its GitHub developer base expand tenfold since 2020, it raises concerns about the risk of leaving poorer populations behind in this technological revolution.
The report emphasizes that while advancements in AI could provide significant opportunities for economic development, they may also deepen existing inequalities. Many individuals in low-income communities may lack the necessary resources and skills to engage with and benefit from AI technologies, thus potentially widening the poverty gap.
“As we embrace the promise of AI, it is crucial to ensure that all communities, especially the most vulnerable, are included in this transformation,” a World Bank representative stated. The institution advocates for policies that promote access to technology and education, aiming to empower individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to partake in the burgeoning digital economy.
In Nigeria, the rapid growth of the tech sector is a beacon of hope, suggesting that with the right investments in education and infrastructure, the country could leverage AI for substantial economic growth. However, without proactive measures, the benefits of AI may remain elusive for those who are already marginalized.
