UNICEF and Zamfara State Join Forces to Improve Water and Sanitation Services

The Zamfara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) has announced a significant collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services throughout the state. The partnership was formalized during a meeting between Dr. Abubakar Nasiru Galadima, the Programme Manager of RUWATSAN, and Dr. Michael Juma, the Chief of the UNICEF Sokoto Field Office, along with other key members of the UNICEF team.

During their discussions, Dr. Galadima highlighted the importance of strengthening sustainable WASH systems, which include developing resilient infrastructure, enhancing the operation and maintenance of WASH facilities, and improving faecal sludge management. He noted that these initiatives are crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Dr. Galadima expressed RUWATSAN’s commitment to working closely with UNICEF and other development partners in promoting sustainable and resilient WASH systems. He emphasized that these efforts would significantly contribute to enhancing public health and the overall well-being of communities in Zamfara State. The partnership aims not only to boost current infrastructure but also to ensure long-term sustainability and effectiveness in water and sanitation services.

“The discussions have provided an opportunity for both organisations to engage in meaningful dialogue about advancing the WASH agenda in Zamfara State,” Dr. Galadima stated.

This collaboration comes at a critical time as Zamfara continues to face challenges related to water access and sanitation. By leveraging UNICEF's expertise and support, RUWATSAN aims to create a robust framework that addresses these issues and fosters healthier communities across the state.
