In a significant stride towards enhancing educational opportunities in Nigeria, nearly one million students are now benefitting from free digital learning opportunities, thanks to a partnership between Airtel Africa, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Federal Government. This initiative has successfully connected around 2,000 schools and trained over 19,000 teachers, aiming to equip the youth with essential skills for future employment in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The program is designed to eliminate data-cost barriers to education by providing free access to various learning platforms. Students are being equipped with vital digital literacy skills, as well as knowledge in artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and employability, which are crucial for their future careers. The impact of this initiative was highlighted during a recent assessment tour by a joint delegation from Airtel Africa and UNICEF in Lagos, where stakeholders observed firsthand how technology is transforming the educational experience.
During the tour, which included visits to Government Senior College in Agege, St George’s U.N.A. Primary School in Ipaja, and Yaba College of Technology, students and educators showcased the practical benefits of digital learning. At Government Senior College, for instance, students demonstrated how digital tools, including artificial intelligence applications, are enhancing classroom activities and broadening their learning horizons.
“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that every child has access to quality education,” said Garreth Spillane, Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Airtel Africa, underscoring the collaborative effort's significance.
As the initiative continues to expand, it holds the promise of transforming the educational landscape in Nigeria, preparing the younger generation for the challenges of the future and fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth.
