President Donald Trump has officially sanctioned the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the convicted shooter responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and injured more than two dozen others. This decision, confirmed by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, introduces the rare practice of a military execution by firing squad, a method not utilized since 1961.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was found guilty in 2013 for his role in the Al-Qaeda inspired attack at the Texas military base, where he opened fire at a medical facility. The attack predominantly targeted U.S. soldiers, with twelve of the deceased being active military personnel. Reports indicate that Hasan, who opted to represent himself during the trial, did not contest the charges and expressed a desire for execution, raising concerns among court-appointed defense attorneys.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth highlighted the approval of the execution, stating, “Judgement day for Hasan has finally come.” The specific time and location for the execution will be determined by the Secretary of the Army, marking a significant moment in U.S. military justice and the ongoing discussions surrounding capital punishment.

As a U.S.-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, Hasan’s case has drawn widespread media attention and has been a focal point in discussions about domestic terrorism and military security. The Fort Hood shooting remains one of the deadliest incidents of gun violence on a U.S. military base, prompting an ongoing dialogue about mental health screening and the safety of service members.
