A tragic road traffic accident occurred on Monday along the JBD/ORE route in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, claiming the lives of nine individuals. The incident took place at approximately 4:55 p.m. in the Bethel area, when a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus registered under Delta Line collided with a white Sino Truck belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd. Both vehicles were involved in the fatal crash, resulting in the death of all nine occupants.
According to a statement from Afolabi Odunsi, Chief Route Commander and Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Sector Command, the accident was exacerbated by wet road conditions due to ongoing rain at the time of the collision. Preliminary investigations suggest that speed violation (SPV) was a significant contributing factor to the crash.
In response to the distress call, the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes, promptly evacuating the victims' bodies to the General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode. The damaged vehicles were subsequently towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Motor Traffic Division.
Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi has urged road users, particularly operators of commercial vehicles, to adhere strictly to speed limits and exercise heightened caution when driving in rainy conditions. The FRSC continues to emphasize the importance of road safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
