Tinubu Urges Christian Leaders to Promote Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections

In a significant address ahead of the 2027 general elections, President Bola Tinubu has urged Christian leaders to refrain from using their pulpits as platforms for incitement. Speaking at the 2026 International Synod of Charismatic Archbishops, Bishops and Apostles held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, Tinubu stressed the need for peace and responsible engagement in the electoral process.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the President highlighted the crucial role the Church can play in promoting peace and national security. He called on church leaders to act as mediators to bridge religious and denominational divides, emphasizing that Nigeria’s unity should transcend political contests.

“As charismatic bishops and fathers of faith, you have a decisive role to play in helping to ensure that Nigeria does not lose,” Tinubu stated. “I urge you, therefore, to encourage peaceful and consensual participation in the election.”

Tinubu's message was clear: political ambition should never supersede national peace and unity. He urged religious leaders to raise their voices against anti-democratic practices such as vote buying, hate speech, and the weaponization of ethnicity and religion. He maintained that the integrity of the electoral process is paramount and should be safeguarded by all stakeholders, including spiritual leaders.

As the country gears up for the elections, Tinubu's plea serves as a reminder of the influential role that religious leaders hold in shaping public discourse and promoting a peaceful electoral atmosphere. He concluded by calling for issue-based campaigns that prioritize Nigeria's collective interest over personal ambition.
