In a harrowing episode that underscores the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, armed terrorists hijacked two 18-seater buses on the Owerri-Onitsha expressway in Imo State, abducting 19 prospective corps members along with several other passengers. The incident took place in the early hours of the day when the buses were traveling from Ibadan to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and Bende in Abia State, highlighting the vulnerability of travelers on this critical route.
A local source reported that the terrorists intercepted the buses near the Umunoha axis in Mbaitolu, forcing the passengers into nearby bushes before security forces could respond to the scene. This alarming act of violence has reignited fears among Nigerians about the safety of commuters, particularly students and young adults heading to mandatory service locations.
Among those affected is Mrs. Alimotu Akanke, mother of one of the victims, Akande Farouq. In a distressing social media post, she shared her anguish: “What happened is that my child was going to serve in Abia State. He left the park yesterday... the next thing, we saw was a brief text message: ‘Kidnappers!’” This heart-wrenching account highlights the emotional turmoil faced by families as they anxiously await news of their loved ones.
This incident not only raises questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place to protect travelers but also emphasizes the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to combat the persistent threat of terrorism in Nigeria. As the country grapples with escalating violence, the safety of citizens, particularly during their transit, remains a pressing concern that demands immediate attention from authorities.
