The strike action initiated by lecturers at Taraba State University (TSU) in Jalingo has entered its ninth consecutive day, reflecting a deepening crisis in the academic institution. The strike, primarily driven by the lecturers' demands for the settlement of long-overdue salary arrears, has left students without classes and the academic calendar in jeopardy.
Lecturers have expressed their frustration over the state government's failure to address their financial concerns, which they claim have been outstanding for several months. "We have reached a point where we can no longer continue to work without receiving our rightful dues," stated Dr. Peter Nwosu, a senior lecturer at TSU. "Our students deserve better, and we are dedicated to ensuring they receive a quality education, but we must also be compensated for our efforts."
The repercussions of this strike are being felt across the campus, with many students expressing their disappointment and anxiety about the potential delay in their academic progress. "We are worried that this strike will affect our graduation dates and academic performance," lamented Jane Abubakar, a final-year student. "The government needs to act swiftly to resolve this issue."
As discussions between the lecturers’ union and university administration continue, the hope remains that a resolution can be reached soon. The Taraba State government has yet to issue a public statement addressing the strike, leaving many to speculate on the next steps in this ongoing situation.
