South Africa launched their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign in style on Saturday, defeating Guinea 2-1 in a match filled with tension and drama at the iconic Soweto Stadium. The victory was marked by significant contributions from defenders Ime Okon and Samukele Kabini, both of whom netted their first international goals, showcasing the depth of talent in the South African squad.

In the first half, Okon, who plies his trade in Germany's second-tier league with Hannover, opened the scoring in the 30th minute by capitalizing on a loose ball, striking it into the net from close range. The hosts maintained their lead until the second half when Guinea found an equalizer through Seydouba Cisse, who pounced on a poorly cleared free kick in the 69th minute, firing past South African captain Ronwen Williams.

However, South Africa's resilience shone through as Kabini, who had just come on as a substitute for Aubrey Modiba, scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute. The Norway-based full-back raced past the Guinea defense to beat goalkeeper Soumaila Sylla at his near post, ensuring a triumphant start for the team under the guidance of new head coach Pitso Mosimane.

“We have inherited a team that retains possession well but needs to work on its finishing. This victory is a stepping stone for us as we aim for a successful qualifying campaign,” said Mosimane following the match.

The match also highlighted the threats posed by both teams, with Guinea's striker Serhou Guirassy, known for his scoring prowess at Borussia Dortmund, drawing attention, though it was winger Aliou Balde who proved to be more dangerous.
