The political landscape in Sokoto State has been shaken after an attack on the convoy of Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, the governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The incident occurred on the night of October 30, 2026, just after Dan’iya had escorted former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the airport. Gunmen reportedly opened fire on his convoy, which included bulletproof vehicles, causing damage but fortunately leaving Dan’iya unharmed.
According to reports, the attack took place around 9 PM, and the Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that they were aware of the situation. DSP Ahmad Rufae, the Public Relations Officer for the command, assured that an investigation would be conducted and those responsible would face legal consequences. The police response highlights the urgency and seriousness of ensuring the safety of political figures in the lead-up to elections.
In a statement released by his media aide, Aminu Abdullahi, Dan’iya alleged that personnel from the Sokoto Marshal and the Sokoto State Community Guard had initially blocked his convoy from entering the airport area. This obstruction was claimed to be based on orders from superiors to prevent ADC members from accessing certain areas in Sokoto State. According to Abdullahi, attempts by Dan’iya’s security team to resolve the situation amicably were met with hostility, leading to the gunfire that damaged their vehicles.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among political observers and stakeholders in Sokoto, as it underscores the increasing tensions and violence associated with the upcoming elections. As political campaigns intensify, ensuring the safety of candidates and their supporters becomes paramount to maintaining a democratic and peaceful electoral process.
