In a recent statement, Vice President Kashim Shettima defended the economic measures implemented by President Bola Tinubu, claiming that the nation was dangerously close to collapse before the withdrawal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates. Speaking after a meeting with Tinubu at his Lagos residence, Shettima emphasized the importance of these reforms in stabilizing Nigeria's economy.
“We are quite thrilled that he is back on the beat, and we have been in regular contact throughout his sojourn abroad,” Shettima stated, highlighting the administration's commitment to maintaining communication and updating the President on critical developments. He noted that the advancements in technology have enabled effective leadership, even from a distance.
“He saved the economy… saved the nation from falling to pieces,” Shettima remarked, reinforcing his belief that Tinubu's policies are essential for the country's recovery.
While addressing concerns regarding the removal of the petrol subsidy and the realignment of exchange rates, the Vice President argued that such decisions were not only necessary but also transformative for the Nigerian populace. “As usual, impactful decision-making that will touch the lives of the Nigerian people,” he said, urging citizens to show understanding and generosity towards their leader during this challenging time.
Shettima pointed out that upon taking office, the country's foreign reserves were alarmingly low, at just $3.9 billion, underscoring the urgency of the economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration. He called for unity and support among Nigerians to navigate the ongoing economic challenges effectively.
