In a recent diplomatic engagement, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has reiterated her commitment to revitalizing the Ajaokuta Steel Company, an industrial giant that has long been dormant. During a visit by four European ambassadors, she underscored the potential of the steel plant to significantly contribute to Nigeria's economy and industrial landscape, calling on the government to prioritize its revival.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed disappointment that the diplomatic delegation was unable to access the facility during their visit, which she described as a missed opportunity to showcase the plant's capabilities. "The Ajaokuta Steel Plant is not just an asset for Kogi State but for the entire nation; its revival could create thousands of jobs and stimulate local economies," she stated.
The Ajaokuta Steel Company, established in the 1970s, has faced numerous operational challenges, including funding issues and bureaucratic hurdles that have hindered its completion and functioning. Akpoti-Uduaghan's call to action comes amidst renewed discussions about the importance of local manufacturing and self-sufficiency in Nigeria, especially in the wake of global supply chain disruptions.
"Reviving Ajaokuta is crucial for our national development and economic independence. We must not let this opportunity slip away," the senator urged.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic challenges, the future of the Ajaokuta Steel Company remains a pivotal concern for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the citizens who hope to see the plant operational once again. The senator's advocacy reflects broader calls for strategic investment in infrastructure to enhance the country's manufacturing capabilities.
