The Senate Committee on Human Rights has officially approved the nomination of the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), alongside 15 other individuals, to the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This decision marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to fortify the commission's leadership and enhance its mandate for the protection of human rights across Nigeria.
During the confirmation hearing, senators urged the nominees to embody integrity, patriotism, and a strong commitment to national interests as they undertake their responsibilities. Speaking on the importance of the NHRC, Senator Ekwunife emphasized the critical role the commission plays in safeguarding the rights of citizens and promoting accountability within government structures.
The Senate's endorsement comes at a crucial time when the NHRC is poised to tackle numerous human rights issues in the country, including police brutality, gender-based violence, and the rights of marginalized communities. The new board members are expected to lead initiatives aimed at addressing these pressing challenges while ensuring that the voices of the most vulnerable populations are heard.
“As you step into these roles, remember that your commitment to integrity and service will be the cornerstone of your success,” Senator Ekwunife remarked during the confirmation.
The appointments are now subject to final confirmation by the full Senate, after which the newly constituted board will be expected to hit the ground running in its mandate to promote and protect human rights in Nigeria.
