Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has officially been named the new General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This appointment, announced on Sunday via CAF's official website, follows an extensive recruitment process aimed at identifying the most qualified candidate for the pivotal role. Adamu had been serving as acting General Secretary since March, stepping in after the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, who has since taken on the presidency of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized Adamu's extensive qualifications in his announcement, noting that the decision came after a competitive recruitment exercise that included a wide advertisement of the position and interviews with several candidates. “Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events,” Motsepe stated. His leadership has been instrumental in the successful organization of major continental competitions, including the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
Adamu's background also includes a graduate degree from the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law, and Humanities of Sport, which further enhances his capability to navigate the complexities of football governance at the continental level. His appointment is seen as a significant step forward for CAF, as it aims to strengthen its operational framework and expand its reach across African football.
“He has played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions, and his institutional knowledge will be invaluable as we move forward,” Motsepe added, highlighting the importance of continuity and expertise in leadership roles.
This strategic leadership change within CAF is expected to bolster the organization’s efforts in fostering football development across Africa, ensuring that the continent remains competitive on the global stage.
