Rift Among APC Governors Deepens Over Wike's Influence and Loyalty

The ongoing conflict between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and a faction of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors has escalated, creating a significant rift within the party's 31 state chief executives. As the political landscape shifts, some governors are rallying behind Wike, while others align with the chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and Kwara State governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

A senior party official revealed, “I can tell you that not all the governors are opposed to the minister. Many of them were his friends before now. The minister was a governor too. Even if everyone turns against him, you know that he has the Adamawa governor and some others with him.” This statement underscores the complexities of loyalty and alliances that have emerged within the party as it prepares for the critical elections in 2027.

Supporters of Wike include notable figures such as Adamawa State governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Akwa Ibom State governor Umo Eno, and Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. On the other hand, Uzodimma, AbdulRazaq, and several other governors, including Kaduna’s Uba Sani and Ogun’s Dapo Abiodun, express strong opposition to Wike’s stance, indicating a potentially damaging split.

As the situation develops, many governors are opting for a cautious approach, choosing to withhold their commitments until the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This wait-and-see strategy reflects the delicate balance of power and influence within the APC, as members navigate their positions amidst rising tensions.
