Policy Alert Urges National Assembly to Address Nigeria's Investment Treaty Risks
A call has been made for the National Assembly to hold hearings on the potential risks associated with Nigeria's investment treaties. The organization highlights concerns that current petroleum investment deals may lead to costly arbitration and limit environmental regulations.

In a significant move to safeguard Nigeria’s economic future, the Policy Alert organization has urged the National Assembly to convene hearings to examine the risks linked to the country’s investment treaties. The organization warns that existing petroleum investment deals and fiscal incentives could expose Nigeria to expensive arbitration, potentially hindering the government’s ability to implement essential environmental regulations.
The call for action comes amid growing concerns that the current framework governing investments in Nigeria may not only jeopardize the nation’s financial stability but also compromise its environmental integrity. Policy Alert emphasizes that these treaties, if left unchecked, could limit the government's capacity to enforce regulations aimed at protecting the environment and public health.
“It is crucial for lawmakers to understand the implications of these treaties on Nigeria’s sovereignty and regulatory powers,” said a representative from Policy Alert. “We face the risk of being held hostage by foreign investors who may leverage these agreements to challenge our environmental policies.”
As Nigeria continues to attract foreign investment, particularly in the oil and gas sector, the need for a thorough review of investment treaties has never been more pressing. The National Assembly's engagement in this matter could pave the way for a more balanced approach to investment that prioritizes both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
