Police Mobilize Resources for Rescue of Abducted NYSC Members in Imo State
The Inspector-General of Police has dispatched senior officers to Imo State to spearhead efforts in rescuing National Youth Service Corps members kidnapped along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway. Enhanced operational strategies and collaboration with other security agencies are underway to ensure their safe return.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has taken decisive action in response to the abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other individuals along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway on October 1, 2026. In a strategic move, he has deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Shehu Umar Nadada, to Imo State to lead the rescue operations.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Etuk, DIG Nadada arrived in Imo with two Commissioners of Police to assess the situation firsthand. During his visit, he conducted an on-the-spot evaluation of the ongoing search-and-rescue efforts, focusing on the operational strategies and the deployment of personnel and assets necessary to enhance the response to this crisis.
The police have intensified the search-and-rescue operation, mobilizing additional tactical teams and operational resources to targeted locations. Intelligence-led tracking of the abductors is also being utilized to increase the chances of a successful rescue. The collaborative efforts of the police are bolstered by partnerships with other security agencies, highlighting a unified approach to addressing the rising security challenges in the region.
“The assessment included a review of operational strategies and directives to strengthen the coordinated response to the abduction incident,” stated CSP Etuk.
As the situation evolves, the police remain committed to ensuring the safe return of the abducted individuals. The ongoing efforts underscore the urgency and seriousness with which the Nigerian security forces are tackling the issue of kidnapping, particularly in regions where such incidents have become alarmingly frequent.
