Plateau State is facing a significant public health challenge as new data reveals that the region has documented a staggering 11,000 cases of tuberculosis (TB) in the year 2026 alone. The report highlights an urgent need for increased awareness and intervention strategies to combat the rising prevalence of this infectious disease.
Yohanna Bot, the monitoring and evaluation officer for the Plateau State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, disclosed that within the first three months of the year, 2,047 new cases were detected. This rapid escalation in TB cases raises concerns about the effectiveness of current health measures and the capacity of health facilities to manage the growing number of patients.
Health experts warn that if this trend continues unchecked, it could lead to a public health crisis, overwhelming healthcare resources and impacting the overall wellbeing of the population. Public health officials are urged to prioritize TB awareness campaigns and ensure that adequate resources are allocated for treatment and prevention efforts.
"The rising cases of tuberculosis in Plateau State are alarming and require immediate action from health authorities and the government to mitigate the impact on our communities," said Bot.
The state government is expected to ramp up its efforts in TB control, including enhancing diagnostic facilities, increasing public awareness, and improving treatment accessibility to curb the spread of this disease.
