PenCom Aims for Universal Pension Coverage as Participation Grows — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has set an ambitious goal to ensure that every working Nigerian is covered by a pension scheme. Despite recent improvements, with pension participation increasing from 7.8% in 2023 to 9.1% in 2026, the stark reality remains that approximately nine out of ten Nigerian adults are still outside formal pension arrangements.

To address this significant gap in pension coverage, PenCom is actively seeking collaboration with the Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access (EFInA) initiative. This partnership aims to leverage data and insights to drive financial inclusion, thereby allowing more Nigerians to access and benefit from pension schemes.

PenCom's efforts are crucial, especially in a country where many workers lack social safety nets and face precarious financial futures. The commission is advocating for policies and initiatives that will encourage both employers and employees to participate in pension plans, thereby enhancing the overall economic security of the workforce.

"Our target is to ensure that every working Nigerian has access to a pension scheme, as this is vital for long-term financial stability and independence," said a PenCom official.

The push for broader pension coverage comes at a time when financial literacy and awareness about the importance of retirement savings are more crucial than ever. By collaborating with EFInA, PenCom hopes to create a more inclusive financial ecosystem that empowers all Nigerians to secure their futures through proper pension planning.
