PDP Condemns Governor Nwifuru's Remarks as Threat to Democracy in Ebonyi

The political landscape in Ebonyi State is heating up following controversial remarks made by Governor Francis Nwifuru, which have drawn sharp criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Engr. Kalu Francis Okechukwu, the PDP Youth Leader, has publicly condemned the governor's statements, asserting that they pose a significant threat to the democratic principles that underpin Nigeria's political system.

In a widely circulated video, Governor Nwifuru instructed newly inaugurated local government chairmen to ensure that opposition parties do not secure victories in their jurisdictions. His warning that any chairman who does not conform to this directive would be dismissed has raised alarms among political observers and stakeholders alike. Okechukwu characterized these remarks as a “dangerous assault” on the foundations of democracy, arguing that they reflect a clear sign of political desperation.

“The governor’s statement is a direct threat to the multiparty system guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” Okechukwu stated. He further criticized the intention to transform local government councils into tools for political intimidation, rather than institutions meant for public service.
