The Oyo State government has welcomed the safe release of 20 prospective corps members who were kidnapped on October 1 while traveling along the Onitsha-Owerri expressway in Imo State. The young volunteers, who were en route to their NYSC orientation camp, were reportedly abducted by armed assailants, prompting widespread alarm and calls for increased security measures on the nation’s roads.
In a statement released shortly after the corps members were freed, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, disclosed that the government had been actively engaged with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals. "We are grateful to the security forces and all those involved in the negotiation process that led to their release," the commissioner stated.
This incident has reignited discussions regarding the safety of travelers in Nigeria, especially along busy highways where such attacks have become increasingly common. Local authorities and the NYSC have been urged to implement enhanced security protocols to protect corps members and other road users.
"The safety of our youths is paramount, and we must do everything in our power to ensure they can serve their nation without fear," the commissioner added.
The Oyo State government has reassured the public of its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to mitigate future risks and ensure a safer environment for all citizens traveling within and outside the state.
