Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has voiced strong condemnation over the arrest of Elijah Noah, a state coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, in Akwa Ibom State. This incident occurred when police intervened to halt an Independence Day march in Uyo, raising significant concerns about freedom of expression in Nigeria.
In a statement shared on X, Obi described the arrests as a troubling sign for democracy, emphasizing that every Nigerian should feel empowered to express their political beliefs without fear of repercussion. He stated, “Reports that some Nigerians in Akwa Ibom were arrested simply for identifying with the Obidient Movement should worry every Nigerian who believes in democracy and freedom, especially when such identification is a constitutional right.”
Obi further highlighted the irony of celebrating independence while citizens are denied their rights to free expression, asserting that “Independence means very little if citizens cannot freely express themselves, within the bounds of the law, without fear.” His remarks bring to light the ongoing struggle for political rights and the importance of safeguarding democratic freedoms in Nigeria.
Additionally, Obi criticized the hypocrisy he perceives in the political landscape, where individuals who once championed justice may turn into enforcers of oppression once they attain power. He lamented, “One of the greatest tragedies of our society is that people who once described themselves as freedom fighters can become defenders of oppression when they eventually occupy positions of authority.”
