The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an inquiry into a troubling incident involving a private jet operated by Triton Aviation, which made an emergency landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday. The aircraft, identified by registration number T7-SEI and flight identification DWC052, was reportedly en route to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos when it encountered a critical issue around 4:20 PM.
According to reports, the plane was approximately three nautical miles from the airport and climbing through an altitude of 3,000 feet when the crew sent out a distress signal, stating, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.” The emergency prompted immediate action from airport fire and emergency personnel, who were put on standby along with a medical team, ready to respond to the situation.
Further details emerged as the flight crew communicated with the Abuja control tower, inquiring whether air traffic controllers could verify the status of the aircraft door. The duty air traffic controller attempted to visually inspect the aircraft using binoculars but could not ascertain the condition of the door due to its position in the sky. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety protocols in place for private aviation in Nigeria.
The NSIB confirmed the occurrence and stated that investigations are ongoing. As the bureau delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding this event, it underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and oversight in the aviation sector to prevent potential disasters.
