The North East Governors Forum (NEGF) has raised alarms about the ongoing neglect of the Mambilla Hydro Power Plant, urging the Federal Government to prioritize its completion and operationalization. This call to action was made during the forum's 13th Regular meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, where notable governors, including Babagana Zulum of Borno State and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, convened to discuss pressing regional issues.

Governor Fintiri, who presented the forum's communique, highlighted the urgent need to revitalize the Mambilla project, which has been stalled for years despite its potential to significantly contribute to the national power grid. He stated, “The forum acknowledges the concerted effort made by member states in providing power and energizing the subregion. However, we are concerned that the Mambilla Hydro Power Plant remains neglected, and we call on the Federal Government to expedite action on its completion.”

In addition to the Mambilla project, the forum recognized the positive role played by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in advancing regional development. However, they urged the commission to increase its investments in the education sector, which is vital for long-term growth and stability in the region. The governors emphasized that a robust education system is essential for harnessing the potential of the youth and fostering sustainable development.

The meeting also discussed the integration of energy solutions across the region, with particular mention of the Dadinkowa Hydropower Plant, which has successfully contributed to the national grid. The governors encouraged all member states to leverage the new electricity law and the region's abundant sunshine to enhance solar energy solutions, thereby addressing the electricity needs of their communities.

“We urge all stakeholders to take advantage of the new electricity law and the abundant sunshine to strengthen the electricity needs of the subregion,” Governor Fintiri added.

As the North East continues to grapple with energy challenges, the resolution from the NEGF serves as a crucial reminder of the need for collaborative efforts towards developing a sustainable energy infrastructure that can support both economic growth and community welfare.
