The vibrant world of Nollywood came together yesterday in Lagos to honor the late Olu Jacobs, a titan in the Nigerian film industry, whose passing on September 16 at the age of 84 has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Known affectionately as the 'Lion of Lufodo', Jacobs was celebrated not only for his remarkable acting prowess but also for his role as a mentor to countless artists in the industry.
The funeral service, held at This Present House in Lekki, was a poignant gathering, with mourners dressed in shades of green to pay tribute to the beloved actor. His wife, Joke Silva, and their children walked solemnly behind the pallbearers, dressed in matching blue outfits, encapsulating the deep sense of loss felt by all in attendance.
The atmosphere oscillated between sorrow and celebration as attendees shared memories and tributes, highlighting Jacobs' profound influence on their lives and careers. Renowned musician Dare Art Alade performed “Pray For Me”, which resonated deeply with the audience, eliciting tears and sing-alongs. In a moving tribute, Jacobs’ son, Olugbenga, recounted his father’s life, emphasizing the lessons learned and the love shared within their family.
“Have you seen Sola Sobowale? She is a great actor,” recalled actress Sola Sobowale, reflecting on how Jacobs’ belief in her talent empowered her to pursue her dreams. Richard Mofe-Damijo also praised Jacobs for teaching humility and grace through his journey in the arts.
Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, recognized Jacobs as an “icon of theatre and arts who reshaped a generation of storytelling,” underscoring his pivotal role in the evolution of Nigerian cinema. His burial followed a Night of Tributes at Glover Memorial Hall, where many in the industry celebrated his humor, authenticity, and the lasting impact he has left on Nollywood.
