In a notable address to his supporters and political associates, a Nigerian governor has called for a cessation of exalted titles following his recent electoral victory. He expressed a firm desire to be recognized simply as 'Mr. Governor', underscoring the importance of humility in leadership and governance.
The governor articulated his concerns regarding the use of terms such as 'Jinx Breaker' and 'History Maker', which he believes are inappropriate and could foster a culture of idolatry. He stated, "I think we have to put an end to all these appellations. Election is over, and from today, just address me as Mr Governor. I don’t want to hear all these appellations such as ‘Jinx Breaker’, ‘History Maker’ and all the rest."
His remarks serve as a reminder to his constituency about the essence of public service and the responsibilities that come with holding an elected office. By advocating for a more grounded approach to leadership, the governor hopes to inspire a culture of accountability and integrity within his administration.
“I don’t want anybody to equate me with God or give me an appellation that is an attribute of God,” he added, reinforcing his position against glorification.
This call for simplicity in titles and a return to the fundamentals of governance reflects a growing sentiment among Nigerians who seek leaders that prioritize service over self-aggrandizement. As political dynamics evolve, the governor's stance may resonate with citizens eager for a more relatable and responsible leadership style.
