Nigerian Army Rescues Injured Passengers Amid Ongoing Kidnapping Crisis

In a commendable effort, troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), have rescued three passengers who were injured during a kidnapping attempt along the Jos–Makarfi highway in Plateau State. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026, when soldiers responded to alarming reports of gunfire in the area, which had been blocked by suspected kidnappers.

Upon arrival at the scene, the soldiers discovered a commercial bus, marked EPE-840XB, which had been intercepted by the attackers. The sight of the troops prompted the kidnappers to flee, allowing the soldiers to provide immediate assistance to the three passengers who had sustained gunshot wounds. They were subsequently evacuated to the Primary Health Centre in Riyom for urgent medical care.

During the rescue operation, it was revealed that two passengers, identified as Mrs. Precious and Mrs. Esther, had been taken captive by the assailants. In light of this, the military has initiated an operation to locate and rescue the abducted individuals and bring the perpetrators to justice. This incident underscores the alarming trend of kidnapping-for-ransom that has plagued various regions in Nigeria, particularly in Plateau State.

Security sources have expressed growing concern regarding the involvement of militia groups in these criminal activities, compounded by the increasing availability of locally manufactured firearms. This situation not only endangers the lives of citizens but also poses a significant challenge to law enforcement agencies working to ensure public safety.

"The rise in kidnapping incidents is alarming, and it is imperative for security forces to intensify their efforts in combating this menace," a security analyst noted. "Community engagement and collaboration with local leaders can also play a crucial role in addressing the root causes of this violence."
