The newly appointed acting Customs Area Controller for the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Oladapo Afeni, has articulated a robust plan to enhance the operational effectiveness of the customs service. In a statement following his assumption of office, Afeni emphasized the need for intelligence-led enforcement strategies aimed at curbing revenue leakages that have plagued the agency.

“It is imperative that we leverage intelligence in our operations to not only recover lost revenue but also to ensure that we are effective in our enforcement duties,” Afeni stated. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders to bolster customs operations across the nation. By adopting a more strategic approach, he aims to tackle smuggling and other illicit activities that undermine the economy.

Afeni's commitment comes at a time when the Nigerian customs service faces increasing scrutiny regarding its revenue collection methods. His predecessor had also pointed out the challenges of underreporting and undervaluation of goods, which have significantly affected the agency's revenue targets. “We will be implementing measures that enhance transparency and accountability within our operations,” he noted.

Furthermore, Afeni plans to engage with the business community to foster a more cooperative environment, ensuring that legitimate businesses are protected while illicit operations are curtailed. “The goal is to create a balanced approach that supports lawful trade while effectively addressing smuggling and tax evasion,” he added. The new controller's proactive stance has been welcomed by stakeholders who anticipate improvements in customs operations under his leadership.
