The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, apprehending a Ugandan woman who was found in possession of 87 wraps of cocaine. The agency reported that the illicit substance was strategically strapped around her pelvic region and hidden beneath two layers of underwear, a method often employed by traffickers to evade detection.
This operation underscores the persistent issue of drug trafficking in Nigeria, which remains a major transit point for illegal narcotics. The NDLEA's vigilance at the airport is part of its broader strategy to clamp down on drug smuggling, particularly as international travel resumes post-pandemic.
“The NDLEA is committed to ensuring that our borders are secured against drug traffickers. We will continue to intensify our efforts in monitoring and apprehending individuals attempting to exploit our airport facilities for illegal activities,” stated an NDLEA spokesperson.
In recent years, the agency has ramped up its enforcement measures, leading to numerous arrests and seizures of various narcotics. This latest interception serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes in Nigeria, where the demand for narcotics continues to pose significant public health and safety challenges.
The Ugandan woman is currently in custody and is expected to face serious charges as the NDLEA continues its investigation into the trafficking network that facilitated her attempt to smuggle drugs into the country. The agency is also urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
