The Nigerian Naira has shown positive movement in the currency exchange markets, appreciating to N1,375 per dollar in the parallel market, a significant improvement from the previous rate of N1,383. This development reflects a broader trend of strengthening for the local currency, as it also rose to N1,328 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), according to recent data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The decrease in the indicative exchange rate from N1,331 to N1,328 indicates a N3 appreciation for the Naira, which has resulted in a narrowing of the gap between the parallel and official markets. The margin now stands at N47 per dollar, down from N52 just a day prior, signaling a potential stabilization of the currency.
Additionally, the interbank turnover in the NFEM has surged by an impressive 181.5 percent, reaching $279.2 million from $99.2 million. This increase in trading activity suggests growing confidence in the Naira's prospects, bolstered by the rise in the nation's external reserves, which have reportedly hit $54.674 billion as of September 17.
Analysts express optimism for the Naira's future, anticipating further appreciation in both the parallel and official markets in the coming weeks. The combination of rising external reserves and increasing market activity points to a potentially robust outlook for the local currency.
