Legislators Call for Swift Action Against Fake and Adulterated Food Products
Nigerian lawmakers are urging NAFDAC and other regulatory bodies to enhance surveillance and enforcement against the production and distribution of counterfeit food and beverages. This call comes in response to increasing concerns over public health and safety associated with substandard consumables.

Nigerian lawmakers have taken a decisive step in addressing the rising threat posed by fake and adulterated food and drinks in the country. During a recent session, members of the House of Representatives urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to intensify their efforts in monitoring and regulating food safety standards.
The call for action was prompted by alarming reports regarding the distribution of counterfeit consumables that not only undermine local businesses but also pose significant health risks to consumers. Lawmakers emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive surveillance, rigorous inspections, and thorough laboratory testing of food products, as well as strong enforcement measures against manufacturers and distributors found guilty of violating safety regulations.
“It is imperative that our regulatory agencies step up their game to protect the health of Nigerians. Adulterated food products can have dire consequences, and we must do everything possible to safeguard our citizens,” stated one of the lawmakers during the session.
In addition to regulatory agencies, the legislators also called upon state governments and security agencies to collaborate in these efforts, ensuring that local enforcement is aligned with national standards. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a robust framework capable of combating the infiltration of substandard food items into the market.
As public awareness of food safety issues continues to grow, the pressure mounts on these agencies to act swiftly and effectively. The assurance of safe consumption is paramount, and the Nigerian populace is keenly watching how these recommendations will translate into tangible actions.
