The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially inducted more than 100 volunteers into its LASTMA Mayors traffic advocacy network, a strategic move aimed at managing the expected traffic congestion during the Yuletide and the festive period often dubbed 'Detty December'. This induction ceremony, held at LASTMA's headquarters in Lagos, marks a significant step towards fostering community engagement in traffic management and ensuring smoother road operations during one of the busiest times of the year.
According to LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, effective traffic management in Lagos necessitates a collective effort that extends beyond mere government enforcement. “Managing traffic requires collective responsibility rather than reliance on government enforcement alone,” he emphasized during the event. The newly inducted volunteers are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening public enlightenment campaigns and supporting field operations through grassroots advocacy and voluntary interventions.
Bakare-Oki described the recruits as community ambassadors, highlighting their proximity to residents and local transport operators as key assets in promoting road discipline and compliance with traffic regulations. He stated, “Sustainable mobility governance relies on collective ownership, shared accountability, and the active participation of every citizen,” underscoring the importance of community involvement in traffic management strategies.
The initiative is positioned to enhance LASTMA's public enlightenment architecture and provide targeted sensitization efforts, ultimately contributing to a more organized and safer driving environment during the festive season. The agency aims to leverage the enthusiasm and local knowledge of these volunteers to mitigate traffic challenges and foster a culture of road safety among Lagosians.
