The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported a staggering 1,324 emergency incidents, including fires and building collapses, from January to September 2023. This figure underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the densely populated metropolis, where rapid urbanization often outpaces infrastructure development and safety regulations.

According to the agency's assessment, the total value of properties affected during this period was estimated at N92.68 billion. However, due to swift response and effective management strategies, LASEMA was able to save approximately N79.44 billion worth of property, highlighting the importance of preparedness and emergency response systems in mitigating disaster impacts.

In a statement, LASEMA emphasized the need for continuous public awareness campaigns aimed at educating residents about fire safety and building regulations. “Our goal is to minimize risks by ensuring that the public is well-informed and prepared for emergencies,” said the agency's spokesperson.

The rise in emergency incidents echoes the pressing necessity for improved urban planning and enforcement of building codes in Lagos. As the city grapples with its rapid growth, stakeholders are urged to prioritize safety standards to protect lives and properties.

“We must work together to enhance our city’s resilience against disasters,” the spokesperson added, calling for collaboration between government agencies, private sectors, and the community.
