Lagos Health Commissioner Assures No Diphtheria Outbreak Amid Rising Cases

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has reassured residents that there is currently no outbreak of diphtheria in the state, despite the recording of 53 suspected cases so far this year. During a media briefing, Abayomi emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant as the disease spreads in other parts of Nigeria, particularly in states such as Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Benue, and Zamfara.

Abayomi highlighted that of the 53 suspected cases, six have been laboratory-confirmed, prompting the state government to adopt precautionary measures. He stated, “We are appealing to all Lagosians to remain calm. There is no current outbreak of diphtheria in Lagos. We are simply taking precautionary measures.” This proactive approach is deemed essential given the high level of movement between Lagos and the affected regions, which increases the risk of community transmission.

The Commissioner urged parents to ensure that their children complete the three doses of diphtheria immunization, underscoring the role of vaccination in preventing the disease's spread. He noted that with Lagos' vast population and its extensive connections across the country, the potential for imported cases necessitates enhanced surveillance and preparedness.

In addressing the public's concerns, Abayomi reiterated that the state is closely monitoring the situation. He called for collective responsibility among citizens to help detect and manage any potential cases promptly, thereby safeguarding the health of the community.
